Expert Witness Courtroom Testimony Class

This course will satisfy the International Association of Arson Investigators Certified Fire Investigator Program requirement for 2 verifiable instances of expert witness testimony.

The first day consists of 8 hrs of instruction on legal issues and NFPA 921.

  • The second day is a simulated Courtroom testimony experience and is conducted in an actual courtroom with attorneys filling the roles of Prosecutor, Defense Attorney and Judge. These activities will be videotaped and reviewed with each participant. Dress uniform or business suits will be required for this portion of the course.

Three pre-class assignments are required to be completed at given intervals of 3 weeks, 2 weeks and one week before the class. Participants should be able to prepare a 2½ page printed report on Thursday night for presentation on Friday morning. Friday’s session will be a review of Thursday’s presentations. A CD with all information required will be provided to each participant 6 weeks prior to the course upon receipt of non-refundable registration fee of $350.

Gas explosions: This course will discuss the properties of propane and natural gas and test explosions conducted by the MN chapter also discussion of investigating gas explosions and also case studies.

Flashover and unusual burn patterns: This course will discuss some of the myths of fire investigation, also the dynamics and issues with flashover and show test burns of many fires and also strange and unusual fire patterns and causes. Live burns will be conducted using burn cells and demonstration burns with various surfaces and ignitable liquids

Electricity and fire investigations: This course will talk about electricity as a fire cause and show investigators that electricity can leave some interesting and unusual artifacts.

Explosives and Improvised Explosive Devices: This course will discuss explosives and IED’s and will have live demonstrations to show participants the damage patterns from different devices.
